The Alamo
No trip to San Antonio would be complete without a visit to The Alamo. This historic site is known around the world as the site of the Battle of the Alamo during the Texas Revolution. Visitors can explore the Alamo grounds, including the mission itself and the Long Barrack Museum. The Alamo is a must-see for anyone interested in Texas history.
The Witte Museum
The Witte Museum is a natural history and science museum located on the Museum Reach of the San Antonio River. The museum features permanent exhibits on topics such as Texas wildlife, dinosaurs, and marine life. The Witte also has a number of changing exhibits throughout the year.Recent past exhibitions have included “Maya: Hidden Worlds Revealed” and “Tutankhamun: Treasures of the Golden Pharaoh.”
The McNay Art Museum
The McNay Art Museum is the first modern art museum in Texas. It was founded in 1954 and is located in its original building in Midtown San Antonio. In addition to its collection of 19th- and 20th-century European and American art, the McNay also has temporary exhibitions featuring works by contemporary artists. Recent exhibitions have included “Yayoi Kusama: Infinity Mirrors” and ” Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, and Mexican Modernism from the Jacques and Natasha Gelman Collection.” Named for its founder Marion Koogler McNay, this museum is a jewel in San Antonio’s art scene.
The Institute of Texan Cultures
The Institute of Texan Cultures is a Smithsonian Affiliate located on the UTSA Hemisfair Campus downtown. The ITC is dedicated to celebrating the diverse cultures that make up Texas through exhibitions, educational programs, and events. The ITC hosts more than 300 events each year, including an annual two-day music festival called TexFest that features live music from a variety of genres performed by Texas musicians. The ITC also has rotating exhibits on topics such as foodways, folk arts, and telecommunications.
The San Antonio Children’s Museum
The San Antonio Children’s Museum is perfect for families with young children. This hands-on museum features interactive exhibits on STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math), literacy, health and well-being, and the arts. Kids can explore different careers with Caring Carousel or build their own creations in Think It Up! recent exhibit expansion includes Maker Space which allows kids to tinker and experiment with different materials. With so much to see and do, your little ones are sure to have a blast at this museum.
